Lesson Plan: The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats

Book: The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats

Materials: The Snowy Day, a large area of snow to play in (preferably with trees!), hot chocolate, cups.

Age Group: 3-5

Inside:
1. Preparation: Make sure that all of the parents know to have their kids dress warm. This lesson is
all about playing in the snow, so they will get wet and snowy! Make the hot chocolate.
2. Ask the kids what their favorite thing about playing in the snow is. You might want to make note
of this for later when you go outside to play. Ask them if they’ve ever tried to bring snow inside.
What happened to it?
3. Read the book The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats.
4. Get the kids all bundled up. Warning: this could take a while!

Outside:
5. Head out into the snow. Practice making tracks like the boy in the story by walking with your
toes in, your toes out, or shuffling your feet. Try making some new shapes, too! Dinosaurs and
aliens are always fun. Have the kids shake snow off of trees, but make sure they do it gently. You
don’t want to hurt any! Build snowmen or snow forts and make snow angels. Let the kids come
up with their own ideas, too!
6. Before coming inside, have each kid take a little snowball with them. When you get inside,
watch the snow melt slowly (you’re going to want to do this in an area that can get wet!).
Alternatively, take a shallow plate or bowl full of snow inside to watch. Before going inside,
make sure the kids brush off as much snow as possible.
7. Enjoy a cup of hot chocolate, and talk about your day!
