Lesson Plan: "the Salamander Room" by Anne Mazer

Objective: Teach kids that nature should be respected and that wild animals belong outside. This is also subtly a lesson about ecosystems and what animals need to survive.

Target Age Group: 5-9

1)      Read “the Salamander Room” by Anne Mazer. Talk with the kids about what the salamander needed to survive and what the boy in the story learned.

2)      Take the kids outside.

 a.       First, play a game of Salamander Room Bingo. To play this you need to do some preparation before the lesson by making Salamander Room Bingo sheets. Each sheet should look like a Bingo board, but rather than numbers, each box should have a picture of one of the objects in nature that were featured in the Salamander room book. Examples would be insects, birds, water, and large rocks. When each child has a Bingo sheet, take a short nature walk outside and have the kids keep an eye out for the objects on their sheet. If an object is found, every child can cross out that object on their sheet. It’s fun, but not necessary, to have a prize for the winner.

b.      As you walk back to your building, have the kids look for small rocks along the path that could be used as pet rocks. You should also have brought backup rocks for the pet rock activity, especially if there aren’t many rocks in your area.

3)      Make pet rocks. Good pet rock-making materials include markers, buttons, stickers, and hot glue- but use whatever creative ideas you have!
